🎬film: Mountains May Depart by Jia Zhangke
Director Jia Zhangke’s 2015 work focuses on strained familial ties, immigrant living, and the rapid modernisation of China all in one film. Plus there’s two scenes with the Pet Shop Boys’ “Go West,” phenomenal.
🎶tune: Regret by New Order (Slow ‘n’ Lo mix) by Sabres
Rest in peace to Andrew Weatherall, whose work on classics like Screamadelica pioneered acid house and introduced me to a possibility where hip hop and guitars can coexist without sounding like nu-metal. A dance song you can put on while brewing tea. New Order is the best.
📖reads: The Superrationals by Stephanie LaCava
This has the style of contemporary fiction right now that’s quite popular… Think Tao Lin, Sally Rooney, monologue type writing with short, economical prose. Has all the art world references that you love and simulates sitting around the David Zwirner desk and listening to colleagues gossip.
🎨art: Matthew Wong
Canada-via-Hong Kong painter Matthew Wong’s work has a emotive, quiet quality to it. His landscapes evoke Katz, Hockney, Vuillard and make me very emotional. His show “Blue” at Karma gallery last year was one of the best shows that I saw in the city and his talent will be missed dearly.
👕jawn: Reversible Vest from VICTORIA HK
Hong Kong brand Victoria dropped a lovely vest that can either make you go full workwear appropriator or cosy granddad. Versatility is key! They have a great new edit out too.
